Thanks Scott for the 12" mixes; they sound great as always [:)]

I have to go into my collection to check the promo wl 12" of Love Moves In Strange Ways. As far as I remember the version included is great and also longer than the 7". Unfortunately I still don't have any equipment to digitize my vinyl. [:(]

Maybe I can send it to you, Scott, as I did with the Mobiles wl 7" of "Build me up buttercup" when you compiled the Mobiles Best of cd for CR. [;)] Btw a not so great song, but I love the b-side "Don't pay the axeman"

Besides the brickwall sound, this cd is also compilation-wise a desaster. With all the 12" and 7" versions (and to top it also the two Modern Jazz releases), this could have become such a fantastic collection. [:(]

It turns out the version on the brickwalled CD is the longer version with the extra verse. So in the end I will be keeping it for a mere two songs, Love Moves In Strange Ways and In Love And In Life (which is incorrectly titled on the CD 'In Love In Life'), which, despite being squashed to shit, sounds better than my lo-fi 'For All I Really Care' LP.

And last, yesterday I did a comparison of the new CD to my old 2 By 2 LP, and the LP has tons more detail and fidelity than the CD! This is the same case as the recent Spoons 'Stick Figure Neighborhood' CD. How do these "engineers' even get work???

Maybe because being a "CD remastering engineer" has become as "socially popular" as being a traffic warden.... and thus there are many jobs offers (if you get my joke)

Sadly, I just ripped my copy of the recent Naked Eyes CD remaster and all of the WAV files are brickwalled and sounds squashed - my vinyl rip sounds better. :(

Tell Cherry Red so they stop these practices. They do listen now and then. And this new guy they got doing many of their remasters (Dave Turner) is brickwalling everything.

just got the cd and I am trully discusted with what they did to my favourite song. I can accept the (stupid) decision to mess up the original running order. I can even accept the brickwalled sound. But I cannot possibly accept the terrible version of Love moves in strange ways. It was their best song and the atmosphere of it was just beautifull (accoustic bass and all). So when I heard this shit that they put on the cd, I could not handle it. I threw my cd in the trash. I payed for it, stupid me. i wish someone told me about this so I could have saved some money. Please please please, this is the sort of thing we need to know and it is far more important than the brickwalling.

I got the CD just now. The booklet is nice, lots of photos (small though!) and information. I updated my discography to include the two Modern Jazz singles, and updated a few things like durations derived from the CD.
http://www.discog.info/blue-zoo.html

The group liked the original single version of Love moves in strange ways better than the re-recorded album version, nothing we can do about that. While taste differs, they COULD at least have made the album version available as a free download to those who bought the CD...

Track 5 is "In Love in Life", hmm was it only included on a Yugoslavian LP in 1984?

I also found it on this "promo CD":

Hi JW,

Blue Zoo fully take on board all that has been said about the recent re-issue of our album 2x2. As has already been pointed out on the thread, the original Blue Zoo album was shelved, as Magnet Records felt it to be 'uncommercial' very short sightedly overlooking the evolution of the band. 2x2 became a bit of a hybrid, with songs reworked from the shelved album mixed with new songs such as Forgive & Forget, Count on me, Can't Hold Me Down etc etc.. To be perfectly honest those songs were never and certainly aren't now regarded as shining examples of our songwriting, far from it, hence the reason why they were kind of relegated to bonus tracks on the re-issue. As Cherry red wanted an extended version of the album, songs such as These Days, Fate, Chameleon Waves, Shine etc were considered over these tracks and more applicable, despite their comparatively low fi production. We understand that in doing this the original running order was lost but due to the nature of the album we felt that very little was lost to this regard. The original single version of Love Moves In Strangeways as you pointed out was seen as a far better version of the song by the band hence the reason for its inclusion on the re-issue. However, in retrospect, the album version, which we all do like by the way, should have also have been included and we are hoping that it can be included as an extra on the digital download (when it arrives). We completely underestimated how popular this particular version of Love Moves was and is, our apologies.
In addition to the recent re-issue we are looking into whether Warners have the masters of the shelved album produced by Lawrence Diana, it has a flow, identity and cohesiveness that is lacking on 2x2. Thanks to all who aired their views, we are listening. Ta - Blue Zoo.

Thanks for the information about the CD (I presume) Andy, very interesting. What's your opinion of the brickwalled sound?

Look forward to seeing you locally in Birmingham in May!
