Depeche Mode announce North Amer. tour 09

No venues yet. No midwest, though it's assumed that in the 8/4-8/9 empty date they'll be announcing Lollapalooza in Chicago, at least. Hoping for a 2nd NYC area date...well, 3rd if you count AC.

Cool. Glad to see Seattle on the list...I've finally realized I'd better see these guys while they are still around.

BTW, I would love to hear from members who have seen DM live on prior tours. What was their best tour?

I saw them for Violator in Detroit, easily in my top 3 'all time" of best concerts I've ever attended. Ther entire night was fucking amazing.

Honestly every tour has its benefits. Seen each tour since Black Celebration in 86 and all have been great.

Masses in 87/88 was great. World Violation with Nitzer Ebb opening was amazing. The screens were incredible on the Devotional tour, even if Dave was a strung out mess. Touring the Angel, their last tour, was pretty amazing and saw them resurrect classics like Photographic and Leave in Silence.

If nothing else, they don't disappoint with their stage show. You might not hear everything you want to hear and they don't alter the set list from night to night, with the exception of a handful of tracks per tour. But for my money, it's worth it. I'll be at a handful of shows on the tour. But I'm a DM geek, so...

Ditto. That said, I'll go with the Devotional Tour. This to me was the end of golden era Depeche, a steady rise in profundity and emotional acuity beginning with Black Celebration. By this point the Depeche machine had reached critical mass, tore itself apart and was followed by seemingly interminable hiatus. But the passion, the music, the lyrics, the performance that came out of this period was - to me - their height of artistic fire. Absolute go for broke and self abandonment. While albums after that did have some bright jewels of songs, as a whole they never seemed to retain that same sense of cohesion nor did they move me with the same sense of inspiration. Granted, Angel was better than Exciter and Exciter was better then Ultra so hopefully this pattern will continue and Universe will be better still.

I just want to elaborate on what I was saying in my previous post. (apologies to Ebbhead for derailing his thread but I think a fellow DM geek would allow it [:)] ) What I also admire so much about SOFAD is that it's such a natural extension or partner to Violator, the previous album release. Songs like Walking In My Shoes, Clean, Mercy In You, Halo, Rush and Policy of Truth could easily live together on one album. By this point, the momentum in Gore's writing style had reached a tremendous maturity and sophistication. The thematic content of the songs from around the time of Everything Counts, Get the Balance Right (of course Blasphemous Rumors) began to evolve into something greater than anything else that was happening in music at that time. If you think about it, the DM experience was non stop from here (indeed from it's onset) on up to SOFAD. This to me was like the crescendo of their growth period. What a staggering rush that was seeing them so totally come into their own, destroying all music industry preconceptions and in many ways redefining them.

If there's any accuracy to this set list, then my claim about songs like Walking In My Shoes and Policy Of Truth easily living on the same album will have some credence to it as they seem to be doing them together in medley. Extremely cool.

How's a setlist getting leaked already? A Broken Frame continues to be ignored live, though admittedly, it's not an album well-suited for the stage. That said, pulling out My Secret Garden or The Sun and The Rainfall would be a welcome surprise.

My favorite tour to-date is World Violation, with Masses 2nd leg right behind, SOFAD Leg 1 was great, 2nd leg was alright, the Singles Tour was fun, the Exciter show nearly put me to sleep (with some help from Poe), and the PTA gig was a big improvement..very good show.

They'll be performing in MSG,NY on Aug. 4. Can't wait. Saw them twice in NY(MSG) and PNC(NJ) awesome band.

You know what? I haven't seen them live SINCE the Black Celebration tour. I did like the Music for the Masses and the Violator albums, but the band had changed from a British experimental pop band into an American touring band. There are very few artists I will pay big money and fight huge crowds to see. Black Celebration was the pinnacle of the DM I loved. I gave up hope after Alan Wilder quit, but Playing the Angel was a great record. I might have to see them this time around. Who knows? This tour could be their last.
