Req: Thompson Twins 7" mixes

Postby jmazbass » Sat Mar 19, 2022 11:51 am

Hi there,

I own all the Edsel reissues for the Thompson Twins but there are quite a few 7" mixes that have never appeared on CD (as far as I know.) Could anyone share any high-quality 7" rips of the following mixes - which I believe are still only available on the original 7" releases:

https://www.discogs.com/release/847046- ... s-Watching
This 7" is remixed as I understand it and does not have Grace Jones on backing vocals.

https://www.discogs.com/release/541096- ... ns-The-Gap
This is the original 7" mix (an edit of the LP?) not the same as the AOR mix.

https://www.discogs.com/release/623312- ... tor-Doctor
Is this a unique edit on the original UK 7"? Don't have this one.

https://www.discogs.com/release/1066934 ... -Bush-Baby
Would love a copy of this 7" mix

https://www.discogs.com/master/153382-T ... ng-Goodbye
Also missing the original 7" of Long Goodbye, which was not on the CD single which I do own!

Glad to share any Thompson Twins mixes if anyone needs any...including an unreleased acetate Shep Pettibone Dub of Sugar Daddy!

Watching UK 7" - DJPaulT's rip

Definitely interested in that Shep Pettibone rarity, and any others...

The Gap 7" Version (Edit #3: the U.S. 7" Version) and the AOR Mix are the same. Thompson Twins were plagued with the incorrect playing times being printed on releases. The correct playing time for the single you've linked to is (correction) 3min 56sec, give or take a second.

There is an edit on the US Promo 7" single of Doctor! Doctor that has a playing time of 3min 59sec. Going by memory, the single you've linked to actually has a playing time of 4min 28sec, which is the same as the music video, which has a slight edit at the end to get to the fade out quicker. The Promo Edit begins with the keyboard part, eliminating the blip-blip-blip intro, and also has a couple edits mid and late in the song.

The true 7" Version of Long Goodbye found its way on the US Promo CD Single ( https://www.discogs.com/release/1773057 ... ng-Goodbye ), which has a playing time of 3min 47sec (give or take a second or two). There is no edit with a 3min 32sec playing time, as the single you've linked to has the same version as the Promo CD Single. However, there are different edits on various releases/comps, some with instrumental endings, some with endings containing vocals.

I'll be away from the computer most of the day. I can't do anything more right now. But, thought I'd chime in quick with the above info.

*Edit: I made a list back in 2014 of TT singles/edits/mixes/versions that were not released on CD or digitally back in 2014. You can find the list here: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=34831&p=356867#p356867

Please note, I didn't look at the list just now, so there may be some that have been released since.

**Edit #2: I totally forgot about the German 7" Version of The Gap...

I have 3 tracks for ya, and they are...

Doctor! Doctor! [Promo Edit] 3:59 (I recreated this one from one of the Remastered Into The Gap CDs, as it's a straight edit of the album version)
Long Goodbye [7" Version] 3:45 (from the US Promo CD Single)
Bush Baby [7" Version] 3:47 (from the US 7" Single)

These are MP3 files at 320kbps. Before anyone asks...I don't work with FLAC or WAV, so I can't offer those types of files.

https://mega.nz/file/lOpVQapY#Km0xFVT3L ... yHHz3TbnN8

Also, you may notice the artwork with these MP3s show a compilation title which is not an official release. I put together the comp a few years ago, and it cannot be shared here per NWOF rules. But, the 2-disc comp was recently shared at the THOMPSON TWINS FOREVER! group on Facebook. To those interested in having all of TT's 7" Versions, plus a couple important album tracks and 5 Babble singles/non-album song, I would encourage you to request membership there, as it's set as a Private Group. The comp is available in MP3 format, 320kbps.

I've been in touch with the guy who posted the German 7" of The Gap, as he got in touch with me via YouTube about my 7" Version/AOR Version. I never realized the European 7" of The Gap was a different edit. It has the full intro beginning, has an instrumental cut after Tom's "Hey!" mid-song before the whispered "East, West", and has one more edit towards the end to get to the fade out quicker. (Odd edit!) K.A. recreated the edit for his video that I posted above.

Thanks for the files and for mentioning that the YouTube clip is a fan reconstruction of the European 7". I wish people would clearly identify these attempts as such, because sometimes they end up not being quite right. Sometimes it happens on official CD releases, too! (not Thompson Twins CDs, though.)

Something not on your list from 2014 ... supposedly the US single version of King for a Day (which is on CD) is slightly different than the Rock Radio Edit on promo 12". It could be a difference in the fade-out, or maybe something more serious. I've not heard the promo 12" yet, so I haven't confirmed this.

I have the Roll Over/KFAD Promo 12", and when I transferred the Rock Radio Edit of KFAD and compared it to the U.S. single version, they were the same. I think it was labelled as the Rock Radio Edit to clarify it was the guitar version, produced by Nile Rodgers.

There's an earlier version, sometimes referred to the "Bells Version," and has the alternate lyrics, "Some people hunger, for fame and fortune all their lives. But, they're just fools in paradise." This earlier version has shown up on a few compilations throughout the years, which was "Produced by Tom Bailey / Assisted by Joe Leeway and Alannah Currie / Co-Produced, Recorded and Mixed by John "Tokes" Potoker." The earlier version of KFAD was quite possibly titled as "King For Just One Day," as an earlier proof of a withdrawn version of the 12" Single (TWINS 127) shows that title with a B-Side titled "(What's That Got To Do With) The Price Of Fish?"

And, here's my direct rip of King For A Day [Rock Radio Edit], so that you can compare for yourself. Please excuse the quality, as my turntable/needle are old.

I'm curious if this dub mix you mention is different from the Big Daddy's Dub mix that was added to the digital release of "Sugar Daddy" a few years ago? This can be found on Qobuz, 7digital and I assume many other online music streaming/download sites.

The Dub from the Acetate is more like the Velvet Rail Dub/Sugar House Dub, without the "siren" sound effects. Titled as House Dub, the playing time is 4min 39sec. A friend shared it at the Facebook group in September 2020 (according to MP3 creation date). Since I wasn't the one that mentioned it, I'll give jmazbass a chance to share it.

WOW, thank you so much @eLeMeNOhPeaQ. Really appreciate those three 7" mixes and confirmation that the Gap AOR edit is the same as the Edit that is on the German 12". I thought it might be, but wasn't sure.

Here is a link to the Acetate Sugar Daddy Shep Pettibone "House Dub": https://mega.nz/folder/l6gSDCRb#a5CiczwW_3b-S2NAOJMveQ

Yes, as you mentioned, it is similar to the Velvet Rail Dub but exclusive to the Acetate and about 4:40 in length. A very nice Thompson Twins collector shared this on Facebook when we discussed the acetate determined that this mix had not been released on the maxi single. It is unreleased!

I did hear about that withdrawn King for a Day 12" with the unique b-side. I was unaware that the "Bells Version" you mention on this withdrawn 12" was a unique early version.

@eLeMeNOhPeaQ, it sounds like that "Bells Version" mix appeared on some compilations. Do you know which compilation has that mix? I'll have to track it down.

Many thanks for these edits, are there any other rare mixes that didn't get released on the recent reissues, aside from 7" mixes?

i hope Edsel will embark on a comprehensive Thompson Twins reissue campaign.

Ah, thanks for the King for a Day Rock Radio Edit. You're right. The Rock Radio Edit is the US single version. It's on Time-Life's Sounds Of The Eighties - The Mid-'80s and everything matches, even the exact end of the fadeout.

That Sugar Daddy dub is short and sweet. I like it!

I believe that the version of The Gap on the European 12" single played the album version, as it was mislabeled. I said the U.S. 7" single version and the AOR Version were the same. I just wanted to clarify that.

The early "Bells Version" is on a lot of compilations. It's on the 2003 BMG The Greatest Hits. I find it funny that only 1, maybe 2 compilations feature the actual 7" Version. Then, others use the version from The Best of Thompson Twins Greatest Mixes...which incidentally, is odd in itself. It is based on the "Bells Version" and has the alternate lyrics. I really think this is what was to be on the TWINS 127 12" single, titled as "King For Just One Day [Extended Re-Mix]."

Bells Version:

7" Version:

King For Just One Day [Extended Re-Mix]??!!
