Best New Wave Clubs

the Big club in Houston was NRG's. It was a multi room adventure with different sounds on different dancefloors. After that it was club 6400 (6400 block of Richmond). It eventually burned down. Some of the original DJ's still mix it up with modern tunes downtown at various clubs...

Lots of nightclubs in Manchester, England are 80's themed and still rely heavily on those inimitable New Wave sounds for their juke boxes. I knew all the words to everything that came on. How I wish I was back there. Sigh...[V][|)]

So weird to see people posting about Twilight Zone. Even wierder to see people posting about Primary and Lipps. Childhood hangouts. My best friend used to spin the records at those places... seems like an eon ago.

Agreed that Twilight Zone in Alameda was a fantastic space, I drove by it recently... it's in sad, sad shape now. Such a beautiful old theater shouldn't idly rot.

In Cleveland in the mid to late 1980s, the place to go was the Nine of Clubs. They played all of the good new wave music that came out from from 1978 to 1988. Then House Music hit the scene, and the Nine Of CLubs faded and then changed, for the worse, to the Alter House. The site is a porno book store now.

For shows, the place then was Peabody's Down Under (or, we called it Flea Body's), and the Phantasy (which is still open upstairs in the smaller venue, but the big one downstairs is closed up, I hear - saw Ramones, Shriekback, Ministry, many more there).

I am AMAZED that someone remembers Subway! I grew up in Queens and went to places like Paris NY later on, but in my earliest clubgoing days in 1984-85, Subway was the best and I was there almost every Friday and Saturday night during the year it was open. Were you a regular? [:D]

dave this ones for you. 2 of vixens original members are still playing on the island at a place called buchmans radio grille in smithtown. and they are having a full vixen reunion an august 7. i dont live on the island anymore, but took my wife to see them last year when i ran across their web site. they still rock! anyway, their website is georgeandjoel.com. enjoy

Wow! Thanks Malone. Very cool. Vixen introduced me to all kinds of new wave, and mixed in good ol' rock & roll. They're playlist ranged from B-52's and Bowie to U2 and Ultravox, including a lot of stuff you couldn't hear on the radio.

yup, me too. used to live real close to the mad hatter in stony brook and they played there frequently. smittys back streets, tueys, were some of the other places i'd see them. i always liked there mix of originals and covers. peace.

Boston had a great punk/new wave scene during the late 70's & the 80's.
My ultimate obsession when I turned 21 was to gain entrance to the legendary Landsdowne St. (right behind Fenway Park) club called SPIT. It was a religious experience for me. They had many theme nights. I remember an "Atlantis" theme night when large sheets of blue/green plastic were hung from the ceiling to simulate the club being underwater. In 1988 SPIT was renovated & became AXIS, which is what it is still called today. It's never been the same...[V]

O.K. I got another Long Island club for you. Anybody remember Speaks? Later on in the 80's it changed to Archies and then Industry. It was a big club and reminded me of Malibu alot.Speaks was more main with the billy idol and stuff but I had alot of great memories there. I bet I know some of you people. I went to spize, Malibu on Saturday! Reds was small but great!I missed out on Legz because nobody would go with me. They were a bunch of cusines (cooshines). Totally saturday night fever. So I found new freinds. There was also a small club on sunrise highway and I forgot the name.Was it blush?
