The last song WLIR played before turning to WDRE..."We want the airwaves". If you recall, the format switched to Top 40 at that point and didn't revert to alternative for several months. Dark days indeed!

WLIR actually went Classical after "signing off," and only for a few hours...the time it took for WDRE to get their transmitter engaged.

<br>Help me out here. I remember a spot with a female singing "Happ-Y Birthday, Happ-Y Birthday. Just can't place it.[B)]
Used on a spot for the Malibu.

Other Malibu spots used the Suburbs "Music For Boys" ("Join the famous who partied at the Malibu..." then various artists announcing their names...Billy Idol, etc.)
Rewind, I'm glad you brought this up since I distinctly recall the very last song played on that fateful day in Nov of '87 was 'All The Good Times We Had We'll Have Again' by The Hoodoo Gurus (& the Bangles).
I also recall their studio broadcast feed being abruptly cut off sometime before the end of the song or shortly thereafter. This was in no small part due to the parting shot comments being made by the WLIR airstaffers.
(BTW: Does anyone have an aircheck recording of that? Who were the jocks?)
I also remember hearing some odd folk music playing afterwards before TMO's WDRE trumpeted their arrival on the airwaves.

A repetitive riff from King Cotton's "Stick to the Grind" could often be heard behind LIR DJ banter in the mid-80s.

If you don't know the song, you'd recognize it once you heard it.

For some reason I seem to associate Bill Nelson's Flaming Desire with LIR too? Was it used in any intros/commericals?

BigBri - I'd be interested in hearing "Stick to the Grind" if you have it

This was used exclusively as the theme for WLIR's Thursday night Screamer Of The Week show. WDRE's Shreek Of The Week show used a different music bed - a slowed down version of Peter Baumann's "Daytime Logic."

Other WLIR music beds:

The "Giveaway" sounder (which started with a "whoop whoop" clarion/siren: SPK "Metal Dance."

Concert update: Split Enz "The Choral Sea" (from True Colours.)

Off The Boat (Sunday night import show): The The "Uncertain Smile."

WDRE's Left Of Center (Sunday night new music/import show): Tones On Tail "Twist."

WDRE's New York Nights (concert update): Microchip League "New York."

Ministry's "I Wanted to Tell Her" intro was used as a bed for the DJs to talk over in the final months of LIR.

^^^Thanx for that one BigBri.^^^

It's funny how some of tracks are so familiar and evoke memories of 92.7, yet sound so different when played in their entirety. Not to mention just how many there were! [;)]

Your right 2NU.
The King Cotton song is a perfect example.

Actually, Malibu Sue still uses that to talk over during her 80's all request flashback show...she's on another LI station called The New Island 94.3. BTW, as a side note, most of the people that request pick overplayed popular 80's NW songs....it's rare you hear anything more on the obscure side and I'm sure Sue isn't too happy about that.
FYI: Sue LOVES getting obscure NW CD-Rs from us infinitely more astute listening folk here at the Outpost!
(I know of one such NWO'r who has already done so [;)])

Hate to thread bump, but I was just listening to OMD's "Tesla Girls" and remembered this topic. LIR used to use the scratch-mix hook from the song's intro for one of their promos.....ok, glad I got that off my chest.
