Gift from the cat

Postby DonGately » Sat Jul 29, 2006 3:21 pm

We have a cat named Hagrid. He is a big old black & white cat with a broken fang and he is a vicious hunter, often decapitating his prey and leaving the various parts that he doesn't eat on the front lawn.

The other day, he topped himself. My wife walked out on the front step and there was a squirrel leg (or, from Hagrid's point of view, a drumstick) on the welcome mat, and Hagrid was doing circles around it, very proud of himself. Not sure where the rest of the squirrel is...

Anyone else have cats that bring them "gifts" like this?

Even better, one time I came home to see dead center on the front steps a squirrel head, and squirrel tail, connected by a squirrel spine. The rest of the squirrel was strangley absent.

Also one time I nearly stepped on half a bird.

I can pretty much say that over the years there's nothing I haven't seen my cat eat. Squirrels, Birds, Goldfish (we used to have a pond), moles, mice, chipmunks, rabbits, even a snake and a frog.

What is it with cats and their daily offerings of dead opponents at the steps of the altar?

I don't know what's weirder, the fact that that's a website, or the fact that he named his cat "Jeff."

That is the greatest website! We actually have a picture of the squirrel leg, but it doesn't come close to rivaling Jeff the cat.

Geez Philly squirrels are really cute. Tiny little cute hands and feet, fluffy tails, what's not to love?

Mine is a house cat so he doesn't get to venture out and kill. But he is hell on flys that by their own misfortune end up inside.

The squirrels here take apart your lawn. I have been at war with these things for years!

Yeah, me too Philly. I even have this one fucker who took up residence in my garage. I just discovered how he gets in and out. He's been feeding on my wild bird seed and making a mess, pissing and shitting all over my Beamer. In fact tomorrow, I plan on going to Home Depot to get one of those traps. I think once I get him in the trap, I'll drop it in a tub of water to let him drown. You have no idea how pissed I am. I wanted to do it with some poison but apparantly you can't buy anything strong enough to kill a squirrel.

edit: Back on topic.....when my wife lived with her parents, she had a cat that used to bring fresh kill to the doorstep. I personally have witnessed the offering of a mouse and three baby squirrels. I could use that cat in my garage right about now. Sadly, he died a few years ago, the victim of feline immunodeficiency syndrome.
