...and hands provisional power over to his brother, Raul. This just weeks after a U.S. government report called for the United States to have assistance in Cuba within weeks of Castro's death to support a transitional government and help move the country toward democracy.

Man, I would love to visit Cuba. I hear it's beautiful. My cousin who lives in Amsterdam actually honeymooned there and showed me such beautiful photos of the country.

Honestly, I don't think it's a good idea that the US "help" or assist Cuba in a transition toward democracy... I think your country has done enough with the commmercial blocking of the island which has only worsened the living conditions of the Cubans.

I think its great! I can't wait to go there. I hope they have McDonnalds by then. Pass the ketchup! Or is it catsup? YEEEEEHAW! U.S.A! U.S.A.!
Actually it will be great because the people are really wanting this. Communism is dead. These people are going to get rich fast.

Who exactly do you mean with these people?... US companies? or maybe multinationals?

Do you think all Cubans will be happy when their island becomes another capitalist country? Don't you know this economical system you love so much is the one that creates more poverty and increases the gap between rich and poor? It only concentrates all the money in few hands, so the rich get richer while the poor get poorer and their numbers increase everyday.
Don't you know the US is the western country with more homeless and poor people?

And if you ever go there, wouldn't it be better to have a nice Cuban dish than McDonalds' junk food?

When my husband was about 12 years old his sister lived on the coast guard base in Cuba and he visited her there. He said it was absolutely beautiful and the ocean is like drinking water. If the United States gets there hands on Cuba it will sure to become a polluted mess.

I'm tempted to say that anything is better than the Communist dictatorial regime of Castro:

http://hrw.org/english/docs/2005/01/13/cuba9848.htm

and that most Cuban Americans would agree:

http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/08/01/miami. ... index.html

But hey, far be it from us to deny the call for help from a decades long troubled nation. "The U.S. government will need to be prepared well in advance to help in the event assistance is requested by the Cuban transition government," the report by the Commission for Assistance to a Free Cuba says. I say the Coast Guard double up their efforts around the Florida coast while they're at it.

2nu, you're of Cuban descent, right? Any thoughts on the matter?

Just think how great it would be for the Cubans who are here in America. If Cuba were no longer Communist and they could come and go to Cuba as they pleased. Families would be united. And children born here could visit where their ancesters came from.
I know I am jumping the gun. But it's nice to think about.

And just think about all the magnificent cigars we'd be able to purchase legally here in the States [8D]

Oh yes, the dictatorial regimes of Pinochet, Videla, Somoza, etc, etc, supported by the US were much better.

And in which part of the island would you prefer to be: Communist dictatorial Cuba or "free" Guantanamo concentration camp... it must be very funny to be locked in a cage and tortured for three years without knowing the reasons why you are a prisoner and having no rights at all.

You guys really believe Cuba will be better off with American control? Do the people of Cuba get to say anything about it or do they just get Wal Mart jammed down their throats? Suppose they voted and choose Russia as their "assistant" or decided to go it alone. I got to agree with OP here. Myself I would take Fidel over Bush any day if only because the old fart is going to kick of soon and Bush has already lived too long.

I don't think anyone was talking about "American" control. Just the thought of Fidel Castro out along with his government would be a great thing.
