At an open seating show you stand in line for several hours to get a good floor spot and you succeed. All night long people are pushing from behind you, wedging themselves into an ever tighter space in front of you. Someone says they're just going back to their friend up front, you step aside to let them pass and they stand in the space you've made. What do you do? After a few minutes the guy's friends show up and all insist on squeezing in front of you. What do you do?

That's a layup. The original guy gets to go back to be with his friends. That was the whole point, right? No way do you let them through. Can't stand snakes.

I went to the U2 show last year and we had general admission tickets... we get inside and we are right up at the railing of the heart that Bono walks out and around during the show.

After the opening band Kings of Leon play, I have to use the bathroom, so I head out saying to everyone I pass by that I'll be right back. I go use the bathroom and get back to the crowd on the floor. I start moving through the crowd, saying I'm back, and thanks. I actually made my way all the the way back to my original spot -- I could not believe it myself. I did not leave the spot after that.

You mean people actually ask to move ahead of other people? What kind of sissy crap is that? Seems like a good way to get your face laughed in [:D]. I wonder if that's a regional thing or if it only happens at shows which I would never be caught dead at to begin with. I always assumed that people just go wherever they want. That's what I always do and so far no one's been dumb enough to question it...[?][?][?]. Anytime I see "general admission" my only thought is "cool!front row time!"

Fight fight fight!!![:)]
I did it when I saw Kings of Leon, then when The Strokes came out I decided to go a bit behind because the bruises were not worth the performance of the band.
When I saw U2, I had seats and I was with the family crowds and older people, so it was quiet and beautiful.

That's why I like indie rock shows... you can be in the front, flirt with the guys in the bands, dance a bit. [8D]

Well I finally got aggressive and lived to talk. I feel kind of guilty because I'm supposed to be a pacifist but there has to be limits. After asking guy #2 to move on and getting an F you response I went the Jaybag route pushed guy #2 out of my space and got #1 to join him. Then I had them behind me. #1 starts kicking my knees and banging my head with her cell phone so I ask the really big guy to my right to trade places with me and he says "sure". I lean back and say "kick his knees bitch" and get back to dancing, well really shimmying in place can't really raise your arms or anything in a tight pack.

Thing is. When you see what people will do just to get closer to some rock star and avoid getting in line early it's creepy

I'm new here...but I don't understand this. Are you saying it's not creepy to line up early just to get closer to some rock star? Or is it that latecomers are just creepy? Please explain.

I love general admission most of all; I don't like to stay seated b/c I like to dance to live music! However, altho I usually go right up to the front row, I don't think I go to the type of shows where it gets stupid violent up there. My best concert memories are front-row (or near front-row)-involved.

Here in Argentina you go to see Jamiroquai and it gets violent. Everything is violent here. Except myself... I'm like the most peaceful Hare Krishna in comparison to the rest of the population. [8D]

Getting in line early is the civilized way of getting a good spot. I'm not suggesting you sleep over night although that does happen. Kicking, punching and lying your way to the front that’s just wrong. I liked the piss on them idea but being a woman the best I could do is hope my shoes overflow and swamp them.

You entered a venue via general admission so you should have expected the events that occured. For you to expect otherwise shows you to be both naive and lacking in common sense. Next time, I suggest you buy a seat.

I don't really EXPECT otherwise but the cultural aspects of the whole thing fascinate me. Clearly consideration for other humans is a thing of the past. It was never more than an affectation of the upper classes anyway I guess but civilization is such a nice idea I just can't give it up.

I wouldn't mind so much if the late comers shoved themselves past people their own size but they seek out the weakest smallest people to shove past. Does it make you feel good Motors, to step on kids and small women in your pursuit of the Grail? That makes you the bad guy in the movie right?
