We are the "new boomers"!

Postby ghosty » Wed Feb 08, 2006 9:26 am

Had a conversation last night with a guy who works in advertising, specifically in the business of acquiring songs for television commercials. I aksed if he got lots of requests for 80's NW songs as I keep hearing them more and more in TV ads. He said yes and that we (or anyone that was a teenager in the late 70's and 80's) are referred to as the "new boomers" in the ad industry and that we will be aggressively marketed to for the next 10 years or so.

I thought that was a funny term, actually.

(opening shot of bald middle-aged man driving through the mountains. Ramones' "Blitzkrieg Bop" on the soundtrack)

V/O: You called your music "punk"...

(qick montage of 80's icons: Molly Ringwald, Rubik's Cube, Reagan, etc.)

V/O: You questioned authority...

(quick montage of 70's punks and footage of the Berlin Wall coming down)

V/O: ..and your rebellious spirit lives on in the new Lexus.

(close-up shot as balding middle-aged man turns up car stereo and smiles wistfully, removes expensive tie-clip and replaces it with safety pin)

V/O: The new Lexus...ushering in the "new wave" of quality performance.

For someone who was twentysomething in the 90's, replace the Ramones with Nirvana, change the punk footage to shots of grunge kids getting coffee and crowd surfing and wait 15 years.[8D]

Well the Baby Boomers are getting older now, probably buying less music, etc. and getting close to retirment.
Henceforth we are the "New Boomers", although a better name would be nice.

I can picture the same ad in 20 years with the bald guy listening to some Black Eyed Peas, the rebelious spirit shown in guys doing some nutty stuff as they did on Jackass and the idols would be Britney Spears, Eminem and Chad Michael Murray.
Sad generation I have to be part of! [:(]

Oh it's not so bad. Check out the Next Wave forum.[8D]

Hey everywhere I look the only significant thing that must've happened in the 90's was Kurt Cobain's death, but I remember a heck of a lot more. To hell with pop culture perspective![;)]

Great. It's not as if I wasn't depressed enough this morning.

Oh, yeah put a Psychedelic Furs sountrack on your ad, and I'll be more likely to buy your product. Sheesh. [B)]

Wow. Now we're the target demographic. If this is true, STOP MAKING CRAPPY RAP!

Yes, like at the Grammy's - Paul McCartney singing Yesterday, and JayZ interjecting his "uuh, yeah, come on" -- a great way to ruin a nice moment.

Rap is aimed at young people not at your demographic. They want to sell you cars, life insurance, etc. Hip Hop would probably be used to sell more frivilous things associated with youth.

I grew up on rap, and I wipe my ass with what passes for rap today. And I am so f-n tired of hearing songs from yesteryear redone with some incomprehensible marble mouth blabbering over it. F--k that s--t. I can't speak for y'all, but "Don't pee on my leg and tell me it's raining Generation" tag would apply to me. New Boomers? Please. I hope that tag don't stick. The Pac Man Generation would be more appropriate.

LOL!
I can still do that too!
I remember the day Bernadette showed the audience how to do that.
Good times.
