Best gig of the year...by a wide margin

Maybe it's just post-gig exuberance, but I'm telling you that I think the Fleet Foxes show tonight in Somerville MA was the best gig I've seen all year. Mind you, I saw my favorite band British Sea Power 10 times this year. Goldfrapp was no slouch, and Yazoo was an absolute blast too. Who knows how many bands I caught at SXSW, including the lovely Shout Out Louds. Of course, Echo and the Bunnymen doing Ocean Rain with an orchestra was a signature experience for the ages.

But I am telling you now, DO NOT MISS Fleet Foxes if they come around your parts. I can't explain it. Incredibly uplifting. Otherworldly harmonies. Monumental songwriting. And just DIFFERENT. Massively enjoyable. If you have an open mind to new music, catch one of the remaining dates on the current tour before they head to Europe:

I didn't see that performance until you mentioned it here. It's not even one of my favorite songs and it's great. I've never seen so universally positive comments on YouTube, and several are of this tenor...

Very cool - big thanks Craig. That's quite an incredibly gushing review to go along with it too. I admit to never having read or heard a formal review until this week. I got a few tracks through the usual sampling outlets and heard enough to pinch the album and EP. Didn't listen to it much at first. Didn't think it was a great album. It didn't grabbed me in any special way.

Then something clicked. Maybe it clicked when one of their tracks played on the Pod when I [i]wasn't[/i] intently listening to it. Maybe it just seeped into my brain in some stimulating surrounding that made me go, "Hmmmm, I have to catch some more of this."

The extent to which I'm catching more of this has gotten ridiculous though. I'm in Boston for much of the week. Most of my afternoon freed up, so I decided to drive out to Walden Pond. The seed of thinking about going out there actually came from (ahem) British Sea Power. The earthy lads recently mentioned Thoreau in a blurb on the Caught by the River website:

So I thought, "Excellent, I'll go out to Walden to listen to some BSP." Except I didn't listen to any BSP. I walked a good part of the pond's perimeter to Fleet Foxes instead. And it was pretty fucking incredible. The people I saw out there were almost like extras on a set - a fly fisherman, two old guys with guitars singing folk songs on the bank, a couple of canoeists, a leaf collector...kind of a cool trip, sans mushrooms or any other chemical stimulant except the ones my own brain was producing to the sounds of these strange Foxes.
