New Order Remasters

To some of the non audiophiles here, I don't think there will be a significant difference, or that we can hear the glitches, and so forth so obviously? What I mean is......are they that blatant, that people who don't listen to every beat of every track like some here do, that my ears will definitely be able to tell the difference? If I buy these and play them in a club, will I have someone come up to me and say "Hey...such and such song had such & such glitches, WTF??", or, are they just not that big of a deal to those who aren't audiophiles?

I sampled some of the bonus tracks from Low-Life (which I originally intended to buy) from a certain p2p site and the glitches are very obvious.

I won't play them in a club if I were you [B)]

DJ Phoenix, the problem lies with the bonus disc(s) only I believe which really sound like they didn't get cleaned up at all. Again, pretend you pull your vinyl out and put it on to cd. Even with the cleanest vinyl, you may occasionally hear a pop or two. That's what's happening here. The audio isn't that bad, it's just that the glitches stand out because they happen early in the song. So to answer your question about what if you are in a club, it might actually be cool because the people there might think you're playing vinyl. [:)] The thing is the more attention you pay finding the glitches, you will will be more focus on that and you forget why you are really getting this, to enjoy New Order. My suggestion is that if you decide to pick up the cd's, just focus on the songs and try to ignore the glitches. They're there and there's really nothing you can do about it. One more thing to mention, not all of the songs have glitches and some of these songs on the bonus are very cool.

New Order issues
===================================================================
Warner respond to fan complaints about poor quality re-issues
10 October 2008 - Peter Hook has revealed to the BBC that the New Order reissues have received complaints from fans because of the poor quality.

The records were released at the end of September and Hook has blamed the problems on cut backs in the record industry and some missing tapes.

The former Joy Division and New Order bassist explained the problem: "Funnily enough we've actually got a few problems with our fans complaining about the quality of the re-masters of the companion discs. Not the LP's because they're safe and the tapes for those we have.

"A lot of them are lost, between us listening to the collation and between them coming onto the CD, something seems to have gone wrong."

Hook attributed it to problems within the record company, saying: "They don't have half the staff they used to have so everything becomes quite a trial, and I know from doing the Hacienda compilation tape, you get a lot of masters of old songs - they are mastered from the record because nobody can find the tape."

And it seems there was some miscommunication with their record label: "What's been intensely annoying for us is that all these people are complaining because they've bought them in the shops and Warner's chose to release them to the shops before they sent them to the band, so I haven't got one. A masterful piece of planning."

Contact Warner

Warner say that if any of the fans want to contact them about the quality of the New Order re-issues, then they can email this address:

I like how it says to contact Warners, but not that Warners are actually going to do anything about it.

If they're going to source something from vinyl, it should say so on the packaging. Full disclosure. That way, people can decide if they want it or not, and nobody should be surprised or disappointed.

And from the list, some of the glitchy tracks are material that were released on CD before, so what's the excuse there?

At least Hooky/Warners are aware of it, and might be willing to do something out it? who knows...just glad they all have the "heads up" on them.

OBS-I agree, as i was about to ask that very same thing.

Finally had a chance to listen to these ...

Movement and PCL sound okay ... not perfect, but acceptable.

The rest are crap. It's like they remastered the albums in chronological order, and by the time they got to Low-Life, they got bored and lazy.

Contradicting a previous post, Technique is absolute shit. Tracks 2 and 3 from the album have several clicks that sound like clipping (didn't check the levels, so I'm not sure if that's what it is). Practically all the extra tracks from Technique have pops throughout.

On some of the albums, the levels varies (in my ears). It's like one track is loud, next one is louder, then it gets a bit quieter again.

Since I see all five albums as a set, I wouldn't recommend anyone buying any of these.

-----

On a side note, the 808 State ones aren't glitched, except, as previously pointed out, that Ex:El is printed in green. In addition to that, for some reason, Ex:El has a different style of jewel case. 90 and Gorgeous has the gatefold kind, where the tray flips out the opposite way. Ex:El's tray flips open like a book would. I ended up removing the tray out of the hinges, since I expected it to be gatefold. Luckily, I didn't break it. Strange.

The previously unreleased tracks/mixes are nothing exciting. I would have preferred Pacific 909 than what mix is on it instead, which should have stayed unheard/unreleased. Same with Plan 9. A few of the bonus tracks sound really bass-heavy.

Ok.....I bought all 5 re-releases, took them home, and listened to them from start to finish. I couldn't really tell/hear any noises on any of the tracks, and i listened hard too. I did notice a slight "crack" or "pop" @ the end of Temptation, but nothing to get upset over.

I think the only things i didnt like about these were: the low numbers of some remixes on the discs. A few had like 3-4 mixes, and that was it, which is disappointing, as surely there were more different mixes for sveral of these songs than just those?

The price was right though, @ $16.99 ea. I didnt have a problem buying them.

DJ Phoenix: which version of 'Temptation' did you notice the crack/ pop on? Is it the original 12" mix - about 7:50 long?

Thanks,

Clarence

"Rhino Records called me back today, after having left a phone message with their customer service department.

He did confirm that the label and band are sorting out the problem and that it'll be done shortly after the holidays. He said Rhino offers their apology and gave me the option of either (a) returning the albums now for a full refund or online store credit or, (b) hang on to the albums for now and he'd call me back when the details/plans are finalized, sometime in January, in all likelihood.

I just decided to hang onto them for now; I've already spent the money, so I may as well have them sitting on the shelf.

At any rate, I'm very pleased with Rhino's response. Bright side is that we'll have great, fixed remasters in a few months' time!"

Of course I ordered the 5 reissues just BEFORE reading this[}:)]

I can only HOPE they'd be "great" because I have no faith at this point.
