It is surprising how long some of these bands have been around. Makes me wonder how many good bands just don't catch the right breaks to make it over that critical mass. Even Ume seems to have been around since early-00s and I've just now picked up a 5-track EP. What happens now? They gotta grow up and go make a real living and disappear or do they somehow go larger. Every one of these guys must have to be incredibly passionate to bother with this shit.

...except Japandroids. They're just cunts.

...but that's just my opinion. You may love them.

...if you're a cunt as well.

In all fairness, they seemed like nice enough guys who were having fun. Kind of like if tomorrow I decided that my brother and I were going to form a band, both of us with marginal talent but only drums and a guitar and we had a crappy PA. It was kind of cute for the one song taht sounded vaguely familiar but aside from that painful. I will tell you though, the new song below (Art Czars) is pretty decent.

ok, finally getting around to my review. The best SXSW ever, like Blir mentioned, running into and hanging out with old and new friends is awesome. Saw over 50 shows plus a bunch of comics. Lost my drivers license before even arriving in Austin. Camera broke and my pictures (many from my iphone) suck. Despite that, it absolutely rocked!

A

Camper Van Beethoven
David Lowery nearly got into a fight during the show with the guy running the show. They totally rocked though. The big head on the left of the video is me!

Titus Andronicus Night Show totally rocked, far superior to their Emo's day show (B+)

Kyle Kinane - Funniest man alive right now - and a great guy!
<a href="http://s46.photobucket.com/albums/f122/pjsaturno/?action=view¤t=100_1964.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f122/pjsaturno/100_1964.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Frightened Rabbit - All 3 times they were great!

Death - It was phenomenal to see them, they blew me away, can only imagine what it was like to hear thse songs in the 70's

Ume - both shows were an A. Lauren kills it on guitar!

The Mother Hips - Why have I never heard of these guys before? 18 years and 7 records? 70's psch rock that sounds fresh!
<a href="http://s46.photobucket.com/albums/f122/pjsaturno/?action=view¤t=IMG_0258.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f122/pjsaturno/IMG_0258.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Alvarez Kings - From England, these guys were excellent!

Vulture Whale - Amazing band from Alabama, recommended. The 5 free beers during their set may have influenced my opinion. maybe.
<a href="http://s46.photobucket.com/albums/f122/pjsaturno/?action=view¤t=100_1926.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f122/pjsaturno/100_1926.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Surfer Blood - wish I would have been able to see them more than just this once

B

Boxer Rebellion - Way better during the day than their over-produced evening show.
<a href="http://s46.photobucket.com/albums/f122/pjsaturno/?action=view¤t=100_1979.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f122/pjsaturno/100_1979.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

<a href="http://s46.photobucket.com/albums/f122/pjsaturno/?action=view¤t=100_1956.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f122/pjsaturno/100_1956.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Static Jacks - These young guys were pretty darn good, nice poppy punk.

<a href="http://s46.photobucket.com/albums/f122/pjsaturno/?action=view¤t=IMG_0285.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f122/pjsaturno/IMG_0285.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Built By Snow - Liked their sound a lot

<a href="http://s46.photobucket.com/albums/f122/pjsaturno/?action=view¤t=100_1953.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f122/pjsaturno/100_1953.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Cracker - Shortened set due to the Camper Van Beethoven commotion, I consider myself a fan, all the songs they played were excellent, just none I remembered and none of their hits. Johnny Hickman (former memeber of The Unforgiven!) was a super nice guy and shreds on guitar.
<a href="http://s46.photobucket.com/albums/f122/pjsaturno/?action=view¤t=IMG_0281.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f122/pjsaturno/IMG_0281.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Nice Coop! The CVB video of Lowery going off is classic. I hope the Gwar penis didn't feel territorial with that shotgun mic of the video camera - that could have been ugly. Funny that we both saw "Birmingham Showcase" and assumed "Birmingham UK" not Alabama - who woulda thunk it. And I may have goaded the Brighton guy into calling you that - you were wearing a Man U shirt for chrissakes.

Lowery was pissed when he showed up and their was no drum kit as promised by the venue. Gringo Starr allowed them to use their drums so the shows could go on. Lowery got shocked later on by the mic, and started ranting and raving about the venue and how bad it sucked. Guy in charge comes on stage and Lowery shoves him and tells him to get off the F'in stage or he was going to punch him, then rips the beer out of his hands and pours it on the monitor (Can I get more beer in my monitor please...?). Best line during this altercation though is after the beer pours out someone references it being for their dead homies!

Actually, I used my pocket cam. I couldn't lug The Big One around all week. I do recommend this Canon though if you can at all swing it. The best low-light small cam out there imho:

Apparently, sitting on your camera does not bode well for lasting life and the iphone camera sucks big time. I suppose there is an app for that....

Saturday night after Titus Andronicus I went to see Surfer Blood but the line was too long so I was unsure of what I was going to see. I looked up what was close and saw Fat Mike from NOFX was playing at Emo's so I figured that would fill the time, then I remembered Rival Schools was playing so I went and saw them.

Fat Mike came out as Cokie The Clown, poured tequila into a bunch of shotglasses, drank a few and passed the rest out to audience members before launching into an acoustic set that was described as depressing and disturbing. At the end of the set he turned on a tv that was at the front of the stage which showed him right before the he walked on the stage, peeing into the tequila bottle and then walking in and pouring the pee/tequila into the shot glasses and then drinking them and then it showed the audience members drinking their shots. He faces a Police investigation:

I can't believe I missed it. I'm pissed. (I do have complete video of the entire show however)

Well that's a helluva cautionary tale. Now I'm really worried worried about that Magic Hat Beer. I only took a sip, but you were sucking on those like a toothless crack whore.

Out of all the countless swag and free magazines that week, this unassuming little rag called Misprint was by far the most entertaining read. Totally irreverent but spot-on reviews and quips. Thanks to coop for finding these online...

http://issuu.com/misprintmagazine/docs/vol3_no5

"The XX - After watching these totally boring goth C-grade Limey primary school Foot Locker empolyees mope through their show, I can't hlep but think that I would have been more entertained watching them cobble together their set list whilst eating beans-on-toast rather than seeing them actually perform."

"Cheap Trick - Is it possible for anyone to be remotely excited about this band? They have the worst 'famous' logo of all time that looks more like the sign above a porno bookstore/sandwich shop than anything rock 'n roll. And the five neck guitar that one dude plays? Filling the roster out with four corn-fucker rhythm guitarists from the Illinois bar circuit would be less embarrassing."

"Stone Temple Pilots - The first time around, STP was nothing but a band-aid to tide me over between Pearl jam records. But now Scott Weiland is out of rehab and has nothing better to do than call up the poor broken dudes in his old band to come party with him and his 12-step sponsor Courtney Love...Scott, just in case you pick this up in the gutter outside of your tour bus, I want to state for the record that Velvet Revolver sucked my mossy balls."

"She + Him - The only reason this 'band' is noteworthy is because 5,000 dudes will show up hoping to have sex with Zooey Deschanel."

"Damage Pants - They are awesome. I'm going to be there eating a shitty taco, breastfeeding and ignoring all the rest of these crappy bands."

Maybe one final postscript. As I look at the lineups for this year's festivals like <a href="http://www.glastonburyfestivals.co.uk/line-up-poster/">Glastonbury</a> or <a href="http://www.primaverasound.com/ps.php?seccion=cartel&idioma=en">Primavera Sound</a>, I'm left cold at the thought of battling huge crowds to see mostly what I've already seen in bars and other small venues at SXSW.
